On January 12, 2010 a magnitude 7,0 earthquake struck Haiti. It destroyed more than half of all buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince and up to 90 % of those in Léogâne, a port city west of the capital. A large number of other settlements were also severely affected. Official figures put the death toll at 316 000, more than 310 000 were injured. 1,85 million Haitians lost their home. The earthquake was the worst to ever strike in the Americas. Haiti had never been a rich country. The first independent republic with a black African population had been for decades ruled and exploited by a series of dictators and military men. Today Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere.

Many of the survivors have not only been traumatized by the earthquake but by earlier conflicts and rampant violence. Apart from treating acute cases it is necessary to establish sustainable infrastructures in psychosocial care. Moreover the whole public health system in Haiti was very weak and undeveloped when the earthquake occurred. Therefore after the end of the emergency phase there is further need to build up a primary health care system. It is on this area that Trauma Aid wants to focus in the immediate future.
